Curtin Troger Nicewonger Obituary (1928 - 2021)

Curtin (Curt) Troger Nicewonger was born September 11, 1928 in Kenwood, PA. Curt married his Bethany Seminary sweetheart, Gladys Mary Royer on September 18, 1949 at Church of the Brethren, Virden, IL and she preceded him to heaven in June, 2003. Curtin is survived by his three children: Eugene C. (Ruth) Nicewonger of Heyworth, IL, Lee R. (Debbie) Nicewonger of Lipan, TX and Darlene M. Goertz of Virden, IL; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Curtin's parents were Emmanuel Earl and Edna May (Ober) Nicewonger, both deceased. Siblings preceding him in death were sisters Nervie Mae (Norman) Emigh, Ruby (Warren) Bisch, Irene (Warren) Smail, Cleda (Delbert) Pounds, and Helen (Paul) Getty, brothers David (Betty) Nicewonger and George (Jean) Nicewonger, and his grandson Christopher Kennedy. Curtin worked at Fiat-Allis Chalmers in Springfield for 31 1/2 years, retiring in 1985. He was Custodian at the Virden Church of the Brethren from 1989 to 2017. He was also a carpenter and creative handyman for several construction firms and enjoyed helping his brothers-in-law farm. He was a faithful servant of the Lord, and sharing his Faith was very important to him. Curtin was always very active in the life of his church. He never met a stranger, as he eagerly shared his feelings, interesting anecdotes, and life stories. Graveside Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 30, 2021 at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with his Grandson Pastor Brandon Nicewonger and Kendall Cole officiating. There will be no formal visitation prior to the graveside service. Friends and extended family are asked to join his family directly at the cemetery. Following graveside services family and friends are welcome to share with Curt's family at the Virden Church of the Brethren. Memorials in his honor may be made to the Virden Church of the Brethren and will be received by Airsman & Calvert Funeral Home in Virden who is honored to be caring for Curt's family.
